Handbooks of churches and councils

The Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches, the National Council of Churches with Eileen Lindner as editor. Considered the most reliable source for North American church statistics, addresses, and other information, the 2007 yearbook explores A Century of Pentecostal Ascendance as its theme. While recognizing the difficulty in comparing membership numbers, the editors do make lists. Only three "mainline Protestant churches" are among their ten largest churches -- the United Methodist Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in ninth place.  A Presbyterian Outlook (June 4, 2007) article discusses the problem of comparing church statistics, quoting Lindner. Purchasers of the Yearbook may also access its contents online, with information updated twice during the year. A CD with data of 1916-2000 is also available.

Recently published, A Handbook of Churches and Councils: Profiles of Ecumenical Relationships brings together in one volume information on conciliar and confessional bodies and their members. “This book demonstrates concretely the reach of the ecumenical movement and also shows how much broader it is than the WCC alone.” ISBN 2-8254-1480-8.
